How Free Should Speech Be?

In almost every democratic country, the right to freedom of speech is exercised. This is an essential pillar of democracy; without it, a nation is not fit to call itself democratic. But a lot of the time, this could lead to the endangering of public safety. So how free should speech be?

The government should interfere only when it is vital and involves public safety, no other reason. The problem here is how does a person define ‘necessary’? Who’s going to be the judge? If something involves public safety, law enforcement does not have time to go to court and get a warrant. I think this is where someone with high authority should step in. They can make the decision of whether to let the news go public or not. Still, the fact that the authority stepped in and stopped the information from being released should become public after the particular event occurs.

This approach could be better and has several flaws in it. One is that if the news could have saved some lives or wouldn’t have affected public safety, it can’t be changed. The deed is already done. Another is that the person could use this power for their own benefit and not think about the nation. No approach is perfect, but I believe that this is the best course of action.
