Should Sports be Compulsory in School?

Sports are a significant aspect of life. Although they are necessary to learn essential life skills, some students may argue that they are wasting their time and that they should spend that time doing academics or something they want to build a future out of. I disagree with these students but to a certain extent.

Sports help a student to know what it is like to be a part of a team. Teamwork can be done in a classroom, but how you get to know someone when your body is full of adrenaline cannot be compared. Sports also help students get a certain sense of discipline, which is impossible in academics. Physical exercise can also tire a person, resulting in a night of better and sounder sleep. Physical activity can also help prevent major diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and even certain types of cancer.

Having said this, sports are only sometimes suitable for students. Injuries, ranging from a simple toe twist to a devastating ligament tear, have a higher probability of happening while doing sports rather than sitting in a classroom. Some competitive sports can lead to a person being disappointed or even humiliated if they lose, which is not very good for mental health. It can be expensive since you have to pay to get equipment and to get into some tournaments. Sports are also very time-consuming, and if sports are compulsory, then the students who want to be better at academics or want to pursue something else in life are just wasting their time.

One of the solutions for this is that sports should be compulsory, but to and from a certain age. Students who start a particular sport early have more time to build a good foundation. However, this isn’t without drawbacks since even a minor injury could be nasty for a small kid. Sports should not be compulsory after grade 9; in grade 10, some students have a vague idea of what they want to do, and the academics get tougher. Those who don’t can still attend sports if they want to, but those who do will waste their time.
