The Human Need for God
The earliest mention of God in history is a piece of rock, which dates back to 840 BCE (crazy, right?). The inscriptions on the rock refer to the Israeli god Yahweh.
840 BCE was a long, long time ago. What brought about the need for humans to even desire a deity that they consensually agreed was above them? Superior to them? It’s common knowledge that us Homo sapiens consider ourselves the ‘top dog’. The end of the food chain. So what series of events might have led us to believe in, or invent, something that was fundamentally better than us?
The earth has been plagued by natural disasters ever since it was formed. Earlier humans could not explain it. They did not have concepts of warm or moist air, or updrafts, or anything of the sort. With a brain like ours, we strive to explain anything and everything. Something like a tornado, which seemed like dark magic? No human could do that. It had to be a being who surpasses a Homo sapien. That is God.
This is just one example of circumstances leading to a belief in God.
It’s raining when I need to go to school? It’s raining. God clearly doesn’t want me to go outside.
A new vaccine was made? It’s not natural. God did not make it. God wouldn’t want me to take it.
That person doesn’t believe in God? God wouldn’t want him to have a good life. I’ll ruin it.
In the above examples, God is just being used to justify what a person wants to do. God could easily be substituted by personal choices.
I hate getting wet, so I will not go in the rain.
I’m scared of needles, so I do not really want to take a vaccine.
That person is not like me, so I will discriminate against him.
People may do what they think is ‘right’ because that is what God would’ve done. God is always right.
Now let’s take a step back for a second. What is ‘right’? Is it right to steal money? Most people will go with a definite no. Is it right to report a plagiarizing colleague who can barely make ends meet? This is where the line starts to blur, where people become unsure what ‘right’ is.
In my opinion, the ‘right’ choice for humans depends on the time period and the generation. 4 or 5 generations ago, same-sex marriage was not ‘right’. Now? You say this there will be 10 hashtags made against you on Twitter (X).
Nowadays it’s deemed okay to fight in the UFC. After a couple generations it may be illegal.
This is where God comes in. Since 840 BCE, God has existed in one way or another. So many things have changed, but not the conviction that a higher power exists. God is constant. Which is why God can act as a North Star. The path which is ‘right’. Obama’s opinion may not be set in stone, but God’s opinion literally is. This is the true need for God. To show us the difference between right and wrong. To be humanity’s guide in the vast and blurry plain of moral and ethical choices. To be a cicerone for eternity.
